Coffee Sankyo
A moment to unwind in the city.
Located in Kyoto's Murasakino neighborhood in Kita Ward, Coffee Sankyo offers carefully crafted coffees—from in-house dark roasts and blends to concentrated cloth-drip demitasse brews—paired with baked goods like butter cake made with Hokkaido-grown spelt, all in a serene setting.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Filled with the fragrant aroma of freshly roasted beans and the gentle sound of vinyl records, Coffee Sankyo is the kind of neighborhood coffee shop you seek out when you want to take your time over a single cup. Shelves lined with beans showcase different roast profiles and growing regions, letting you match your cup to the day's mood—whether you prefer the standard house blend with its toasty fragrance and clean finish, or a dark roast defined by deep bitterness and body. The iced coffee is brewed cup by cup with an extra portion of dark-roasted beans and poured over clear ice, keeping its sharp contrast of bitter notes and bright acidity intact all the way to the final sip.
For an even more concentrated brew, the menu offers a demitasse slowly extracted through a flannel drip filter (nel drip) to yield around 60 cc of rich coffee. Single-origin offerings are roasted to bring out each harvest's character, from a medium-dark Bolivian bean harmonizing honeyed sweetness with nutty tones to a medium-roast Rwandan selection prized for its juicy, crisp profile.
The baked goods set out on the counter are equally central to the experience. Made entirely with Hokkaido-grown spelt, the ancient-grain butter cake features a dense, satisfying crumb and rich butter aroma that pairs smoothly with the edge of a dark roast. Other rustic bakes make the most of wholesome ingredients, including a moist, rich chocolate cake flavored with house-made rum raisins and a cornmeal bread with a crisp exterior and tender center, served with maple syrup.
Those looking to avoid caffeine can opt for a water-processed, dark-roasted decaf, or order a pot of yomogi (Japanese mugwort) tea brewed from pesticide-free leaves grown in Mie Prefecture, which yields a fragrance reminiscent of traditional kusamochi rice cakes. Tucked into the peaceful streets of Murasakino, Coffee Sankyo makes a dependable afternoon haven for anyone lingering solo with a book.
